Common Asylee I-485 Preparation Mistakes to Avoid
Most preparation mistakes are preventable process problems: using an old source, leaving inconsistent answers unexplained, missing a signature, or sending the wrong payment or evidence. Use the current USCIS instructions as the final authority.

Do not rely on stale instructions
Check the current Form I-485 edition, instructions, fee guidance, filing address, and any form-specific updates before filing. A downloaded checklist or an older blog post may not reflect a current USCIS requirement.
Compare every answer and document
Review names, dates, addresses, travel, family facts, immigration history, and supporting records for consistency. If an answer is uncertain or a document is missing, stop and seek the appropriate help rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Check translations and conditional evidence
Follow the current USCIS instructions when a supporting document is not in English, including the requirements for a complete English translation and certification. Do not assume a translated summary or an informal translation is enough.
Evidence is conditional: a derivative relationship, medical examination, travel history, waiver request, or other fact may require different records. Use the current USCIS instructions to identify what applies to your packet and explain gaps rather than adding unrelated documents.
Recheck payment, address, and packet records
Confirm the current fee schedule, payment method, payee, and filing address immediately before filing. A correct form can still be delayed by an outdated payment or address instruction. Keep the delivery confirmation, receipt information, complete copy, and every USCIS notice together.
